Although the
use of combine harvester has been a game changer in rice productivity, it leaves
enormous amounts of rice straw especially in fields using intensive cropping
systems. Most
farmers resort to burning the straw because it is the easiest way to dispose of
them so they can quickly prepare the field for the next cropping. IRRI and its partners continuously seek practical solutions to give farmers better disposal options for straw and convert it to other productive uses. Current research and development initiatives are looking into rice straw for bioenergy, and managing rice straw for use in small and big farm scales.
